Hugh is an experienced executive coach and team developer who works creatively and collaboratively with senior executives to energise their business performance; helping them to inspire, develop and involve their people and organisations to bring transformational value to their client relationships.
Adopting an appreciative, strengths based approach Hugh works and walks with clients on a learning journey, typically over a 6-12 months period. His approach is creative , evolutionary and curious, drawing on a rich range of experience, tools and methodologies.
To achieve specific, meaningful and measurable objectives he works “inside-out”, bringing focus to visions that align values and purpose and identifying concurrent leadership and business/client development pathways to real business outcomes.
His industry experience crosses media, telecoms, finance, legal and professional services, and public sectors with clients including Deloitte, Shell, EFG International, AVIVA and the European Railway Agency.
He is currently working extensively across Europe and the Middle East with Deloitte partners on the transformative Lead Client Service partner development programmes. This work combines Personal Leadership development in parallel with mentor supported, Client Development. Emphasis is on maturing relationships with self, virtual teams, partners and client CEOs. Conscious leadership development includes, personal eminence, negotiation and influence, leading creative change, developmental delegation, performance management and leveraging cultural difference.
Through communication we enforced our internal cooperation and mutual trust, we enhanced relationships with many people on client’s side and as a tangible result, we increased our fees by 4million Euro

Hugh recently lead a 12 month programme for an EU agency enabling participants perform effectively as a team to lead a complex organization through significant change. In a “learning journey” the team were guided to define an inspiring performance challenge as learning metaphor for their business. Hugh has worked extensively at senior executive level in media and brand industries. To from 1988 – 2003 he lived and worked in Asia where he variously co-founded Asia’s leading outdoor magazine, Action Asia and served as Director of ESPN STAR Sports multimedia business, based in Singapore.
Background
Hugh has worked comprehensively at executive level in hospitality and all facets of print, broadcast, telephony and on-line media and brand management – variously as editor, event organiser, general manager and executive director.
He has been involved personally and professionally in learning, development and the outdoors for over 30 years. He is an accomplished rock climber and mountaineer with ascents throughout the world from 6000m peaks in the Indian Himalaya, European Alps, limestone walls of Southern Thailand and the Moroccan Atlas Mountains 11:09.
His post-university and globe wandering career began in London as a waiter with rapid catering chain Pasta Mania! Here he met hospitality entrepreneur Nick Jones (CEO and founder) with whom he worked closely in the first four years of the Soho House Group.
Moving to Hong Kong via South Africa he co-founded Asia’s leading outdoor magazine, Action Asia until he broke his back in a paragliding accident while on a story. He made a miraculous recovery and within a year was back climbing in the remote Indian Himalaya and white water rafting in Nepal.
Returning to Hong Kong he was engaged by ESPN and as part of the merger with NewsCorp’s STAR Sports he relocated to Singapore where for the next six years he worked for ESPN STAR Sports in marketing, event management and business development. He was pivotal in introducing the X Games to Asia and as director of the network’s growing multimedia business he established several joint ventures in India and China.
On return to the UK in 2003 he lead the digital media practice for Enterprise IG and consulted in international business development in China before establishing Because it’s There Limited in which he turned his experience to helping others change through challenge and learn through coaching.
He believes in the unique potential of all human beings and is passionate about learning and energy management as the fuel of whole person development and sustainable change.
